New Students Starting Out at Ajou on the AFP Program

On August 23, 2017, a summer vacation AFP commencement ceremony was held at Ajou University in Yulgok Hall. The program was set up by an international education center and it ran for nine weeks—from June 28^th until August 23^rd.

             The AFP (Ajou Foundation Program) is a bridge program to help students improve their Korean and review key subjects in school’s basic curriculum, such as English and Math, before they enter. It is divided into six steps to reflect the students’ levels of Korean-speaking ability. Courses are held every semester and vacation.

             The ceremony began with a speech by Dong Suk Kim, the team leader of the International Exchange Department. Prizes were awarded to people who got outstanding grades at each level, from 4 to 6, and also to volunteers. Then two people gave commencement speeches, and a short film made by the graduates was shown. After a group photo was taken, this event finally ended. Following this ceremony, 28 out of the original 34 students enrolled at Ajou University in September.

             Zhou Zi Qing (18), who won a prize at Level 5 has decided to major in Business Administration. She said, “I really happy to graduate, but sorry to have to say goodbye. She said that she wanted to experience various activities and hang out with her Korean friends.

             Another student, Li Yue (18) will begin studying English Language and Literature in September. She said that the enrollment was exciting, but “we are all nervous because it is a new start.” She also sent a message to the new AFP students: “The AFP’s way of teaching is really funny. You can have a good time learning Korean language and culture”

            The AFP second semester begins on the 14^th of September. Ji Yul Moon, Director of the AFP in the International Education Department, hopes that many students will be interested in the AFP. She said that the AFP students always pursue their original aims for one year at the start of university life. She hopes they will all become talented people who will use their Korean experience to play positive roles on the international stage.
